Truly Realistic Weather (TRW) V3.01

Possibly the best weather addon on Minecraft Bedrock. Fully physically simulated storm clouds you can see from miles away, tornadoes that tear up the land, hurricanes that flood the coast, and real instruments to track it all.

V3.01 quick version fix: now supports Minecraft 26.0 and above.

Tip for the best look: the vanilla overworld fog can wash out distant storms. On Flarial Client use Fog Changer module > Disable Fog: ON. The addon still looks great without it thanks to far-rendering support.

How It Works

Weather in TRW is not random scenery. It is a system:

A 4-day forecast drives the weather. Each day gets a risk level: General Thunder, Marginal, Slight, Enhanced, Moderate or High. Higher risk means more storms, more supercells and stronger storms. High Risk days are rare. Regional risk zones also drift across the map and show up on the radar.

Storms form, mature and die in real time. A supercell grows over about 4 minutes, builds its anvil layer by layer, can produce tornadoes, then decays. Every storm is simulated, so no two look the same.

Tornadoes come from their parent supercell. They sprout from the storm, move on their own path and speed, and die when they reach the storm's edge.

Storms are local. Rain, wind, thunder and fog only affect the area around the storm, not the whole world. Vanilla weather is blocked so it never clashes with TRW.

Everything runs on a real-time clock, so storms keep forming and moving properly even if your game or server lags.

What's New in V3

V2 had supercells, tornadoes (EF0-EF5), nimbostratus, auroras, the Weather Tablet and a simple Aim To Player setting. Here is everything V3 adds or changes.

New storms and clouds

New supercell / cumulonimbus system with 9 physically simulated anvil types: Classic Incus, Sheared Plume, Broad Scalloped Cap, Mushroom Tower, Split Anvil Lobes, Hooked Anvil, Overshooting Dome, Crosswind Fan and Spiral Bands.

Hurricanes, Category 1-5 (winds from 74 to 200 mph), about 1000 blocks wide, with a calm eye and a counter-clockwise wind spiral. Higher categories flood more ground (1 to 3 blocks of water), pick up more blocks, and fling them harder. They have their own lightning and lighting.

Squall lines: 5 supercells in a line, about 800 blocks wide, moving steadily across the land. The gust front has sustained 160 mph winds with gusts up to 260 mph, picks up blocks, and raises the chance of tornadoes.

Stratocumulus clouds and everyday neutral/background clouds, plus nimbostratus rain clouds.

New visuals

Cloud lighting (like PMWeather): clouds change color with the time of day, from golden-hour orange sunsets to dark nocturnal supercells. Can be turned off in Weather Settings.

Realistic dynamic lightning flashes: no more flat PNG flashes. They vary in size and shape, and light up the clouds.

Realistic volumetric rain with new rain splashes. Rain is dynamic: it leans with the wind, gusts and sways, falls as drizzle at a storm's edge and as a downpour in its core, wraps around hurricanes, and is pulled toward a tornado.

Wind particles: grass, sand and leaves blow around you in strong wind. Dense tree canopies still shed leaves.

Storm fog and sky that change through 32 steps over the day, so the sky darkens naturally under a storm.

Auroras appear at night in snowy and frozen biomes.

Sand and leaf particles for tornadoes and wind.

Tornado upgrades

Six tornado shapes: Rope, Cone, Bigger Cone, Wedge, Bigger Wedge and Multivortex Wedge, rated EF0-EF5 (70 to 260 mph). Wind speed controls the damage.

Dynamic pull: players are lifted into the air and flung out when a tornado catches them. After being flung you get a short immunity so you are not instantly sucked back in.

Better shelter detection: players underground or inside an enclosed base (even under a one-block roof) are not pulled in.

Real block debris: leaves, glass, fences, dirt, logs and planks spin around the tornado and are flung. Sand and gravel orbit it in rings. Debris lands back as real blocks.

Terrain scouring: the topsoil under a tornado is stripped and turned to dirt. It never digs down through stone.

Bedrock, barriers, command blocks and liquids are protected.

Debris is tinted to match the biome it was picked up from.

New blocks and items

Doppler Radar: a block that shows live storm echoes on a screen. Right click for options: connect a Weather Tablet, or change the radar range.

512 blocks (1x1 screen, high detail), 1,024 blocks (3x3 screen, default), 2,048 blocks (5x5 screen).

Shows storm intensity colors, regional risk zones, and the squall line gust front in purple.

Anemometer: its rotor spins faster as the wind picks up. Right click to read the current wind in mph and km/h.

Tornado Siren: right click to set the detection radius (256, 512 or 1024 blocks). It sounds a warning when a tornado is nearby, one warning per tornado, so nearby sirens do not overlap.

Weather Settings item: opens the settings menu.

Weather Remote (creative only): opens the Storm Control Panel (see below).

Updated Weather Tablet: see below.

Weather Tools creative category.

Instruments are built to survive storms: they take no damage from winds below 230 mph.

New Weather Settings

World Type: Normal World or Flat World.

Aim To Player: storms are aimed at you, with an adjustable offset from 0 to 500 blocks.

Instant Storms: skip the formation sequence for supercells, nimbostratus and squall lines.

Cloud Lighting: on or off.

Particle Quality (Low / Medium / High) for each effect: tornadoes, supercells, rainshafts, nimbostratus, dust, rain, doppler radar, background clouds and auroras. Medium is the default.

Storm Spawn Rate: Default, Often, Very Often, Not so often, Not at all.

Spawn Config: switch individual weather on or off: Rain, Rainshaft, Tornadoes, Supercells, Hurricanes, Squall Lines, Nimbostratus, Stratocumulus, Background Clouds. Turning Supercells off also stops tornadoes. Storms already active finish normally. Peaceful or destruction, it is your choice.

Audio

Close thunder claps (within 400 blocks of a supercell) and distant rumbles beyond that.

Wind loops for storms, tornadoes and gust fronts, plus light rain ambience around you.

The tornado siren alarm.

Performance and reliability

Particle quality settings and optimized emitters.

The real-time weather clock keeps storms, tornadoes and debris running at the right speed during lag.

Radar screens are drawn efficiently, so big radars cost less.

Simple Animations (new subpack)

First-person hold and use animations for hundreds of vanilla items and blocks: tools, swords and weapons, the mace, bow, crossbow, trident, shield, spear, spyglass, brush, goat horn, food and drinks, ender pearls, potions, torches and blocks, and spawn eggs. The new weather items have them too.

Choose Simple Animations: On (default) or Off in the resource pack subpack settings.

The animation pack is still a work in progress.

How to install

  1. Download the file below. On iOS or Android, open it from your Downloads with Minecraft; on Windows, double-click it.
  2. Minecraft imports the pack automatically. Enable it in your world’s settings under Behavior Packs or Resource Packs; an add-on usually needs both.
  3. Playing on a Realm or server? Everyone needs the same packs, and the host has to enable them.
  4. Starting a new world? Choose its seed first: the Seed Map shows villages, structures and biomes near spawn for any Bedrock seed.
