Gamertag Checker

Type the gamertag you want. We ask Xbox Live whether an account already uses it and show you who, or tell you it's free right now.

How it works

How we check

We look the name up on Xbox Live through OpenXBL, a service that reads public Xbox profiles. If an account has exactly that gamertag, you see it: picture, gamerscore and XUID. If none does, the name is free right now.

Why free isn’t a guarantee

Xbox has rules we can’t see from outside, like blocked words and names it holds back. When Xbox doesn’t answer, we only have GeyserMC’s list of Bedrock players. That list can show a name as taken, but it can never show one as free, so in that case we say we can’t tell.

Changing your gamertag

Go to social.xbox.com/changegamertag, or open the Xbox app, then your profile, then Edit profile. Type the name: if it is taken, Xbox suggests it with a number suffix.

FAQ

It says the gamertag is free, but Xbox won't give it to me. Why?

We can only see whether an account uses the name right now. Xbox also blocks names with words it doesn't allow, and it can hold some names back for reasons it doesn't publish. The Change gamertag page is the final word.

What does the #1234 after some gamertags mean?

Since 2019 several players can share a gamertag: the first one keeps it plain, later ones get a number suffix (for example Steve#4821). When you choose a taken name, Xbox offers it with a suffix. Your friends see the suffix on Xbox.

How long can a gamertag be?

New gamertags can be up to 12 characters, letters, numbers and single spaces, starting with a letter. Older classic gamertags can be up to 15 characters, which is why some existing names are longer than you can pick today.

Does changing my gamertag change my Minecraft name?

Yes. Bedrock shows your gamertag as your name everywhere. Your XUID stays the same, so your worlds, Realms, Marketplace items and server bans or ranks that use the XUID keep working.

Is changing my gamertag free?

Your first change is free if your gamertag was made for you when you created the account. After that, Xbox charges for each change.
