Abandoned Camps in 26.3: Where They Spawn and Why to Bother

JavaBedrock

Most people walk right past their first abandoned camp because it looks like scenery. Don't. We ran the 26.3 placement code on 100 seeds and on 58 of them the nearest camp was closer to spawn than the nearest village, and the secret chest can hand you an explorer map to an ancient city before you've even made a bed.

A camp is a shortcut, not a dungeon

Abandoned camps showed up in 26.3 and they're small. No mobs guarding anything, no puzzle, nothing that'll kill you. Someone pitched tents in the woods, left a pile of supplies in barrels and chests, and never came back. You can clear one in a couple of minutes.

The everyday stuff is camping gear: bread, coal, string, leather, candles, the odd bundle. The normal chest can add copper tools and armour, a bow, a saddle or a spyglass. Nice on day one, forgettable by day three.

The reason we go out of our way for them is the secret chest. It rolls the good table: iron, gold and copper ingots, iron armour, spears, potions, diamonds, and explorer maps. Those maps can point at an ancient city, a trial chamber or a woodland mansion. A map to a structure you'd otherwise spend an evening hunting for, sitting in a tent 300 blocks from spawn, is a pretty good deal.

How far is the nearest camp?

Short answer: usually closer than you'd guess. We pointed the engine at 100 seeds on Java 26.3 and measured from each world spawn. 59 of them had a camp within 500 blocks. The median walk to the nearest one was 407 blocks, the luckiest seed had one 48 blocks out, and the worst still had one at 981. Only 8 of the 100 seeds had nothing at all inside 1,000 blocks.

On average there were about three camps within 1,000 blocks of spawn. That lines up with how placement works: the world is cut into squares of 37 by 37 chunks (592 blocks a side) and each square gets a single try. If the spot it picks lands in a biome camps don't like, that square just stays empty.

Seed 0 is the one we'd hand a friend: two camps inside 400 blocks, one in a forest to the north-east and one in a savanna to the south-east. Grab both before you even think about mining.

Finding your camps with the map

Wandering the woods works, but tents are low and easy to miss behind a hill. We'd rather know where we're going.

  1. Open the Abandoned Camp Finder, paste your seed and set the version to 26.3 (or later). On anything older the map will be empty, correctly.
  2. Check the Nearest list in the side panel. It's sorted by distance from spawn, or from any X and Z you type in, like your base.
  3. Click a camp icon for its coordinates and a ready-made /tp line if you play with cheats.
  4. Tick Completed once you've looted it. On a map with a dozen camps you will forget which ones you've done.

How much do we trust the dots? The camp check uses the game's own placement plus the biome at the camp's centre, and when we compared it against worlds made by the official Java server, all 65 camps the finder showed were really there. The biome check matters most at forest edges: a camp only spawns if its centre lands on the right side of the line, so a spot that is nearly forest stays empty.

Making the most of the secret chest

We can't tell you what your particular secret chest holds. Camp loot depends on how the chunk generates in your world, and that's not something we predict, so treat any "seed with diamonds in the camp" claim online with suspicion unless someone shows the chest.

What we can say is how to use it. The secret chest is hidden in the layout rather than sitting in the open, so poke around under and beside the tents instead of grabbing the barrels and leaving. Then, if you get an explorer map, think before you sprint off:

  • Ancient city map: don't go in on day one. Bring wool to sneak on, a lot of food, and ideally some blocks to pillar out. The map will still be there next week. Our ancient city guide covers the trip.
  • Trial chamber map: this one is fine early. Copper gear and a bow are enough for the first floors, and the vaults hand out good stuff. See the trial chambers guide.
  • Woodland mansion map: mansions are rare and can be a serious hike. Check the distance on the Woodland Mansion Finder before you pack, and bring a bed to reset your spawn along the way.

An explorer map searches from the camp you found it in, not from your base. If you already have the seed open on our map, compare the marked spot with the finder before committing to a long walk.

Seed 123456789, Java 26.3: the Nearest list from spawn at 64, −48. The first three, 208, 400 then 304, −576 then 640, 208, are all birch forest camps.

Old worlds, Bedrock and /locate

If your world was started before 26.3, updating won't put camps in land you've already explored. Only fresh chunks get them. Look at the map with your version set to 26.3, find a camp past the edge of what you've loaded, and go there. Anything inside your old borders is stuck with the old rules.

Bedrock got camps in 26.3 too and the finder supports them there. On seeds 0 and 123456789 the Bedrock map put every camp near spawn at exactly the same coordinates as Java, which is handy if you play both. Don't assume that holds for every structure though; villages and plenty of others land in different places on the two editions.

Playing with cheats? On Java, /locate structure minecraft:abandoned_camp points you at the nearest one. It's quick, but it only gives you one camp, and on a seed like -1234567890123 with six inside 1,000 blocks you'll want the whole list.

Questions

What Minecraft version has abandoned camps?

26.3, on both Java and Bedrock. Pick 26.3 or newer on the map. Seed 0 on 26.2 shows no camps at all, which is correct.

How far is the nearest abandoned camp from spawn?

On 100 seeds we tested, the median was 407 blocks. 59 seeds had one within 500 blocks and only 8 had none within 1,000.

What biome are abandoned camps most common in?

Plain forest, by a lot: 37% of the 306 camps we found. Savanna was second at 13%, then snowy taiga. Plains, desert and oceans never get them.

Can the finder tell me what's in the secret chest?

No. We show where every camp is, not its chest contents. The secret chest can roll diamonds, iron gear, potions and explorer maps, but what you get depends on your world.

Will my old world get abandoned camps after updating?

Only in chunks generated after the update. Already explored land keeps what it had, so use the map to find a camp outside the area you've loaded.
