Woodland Mansions: How Rare and How to Find
JavaBedrockA woodland mansion is the rarest big structure in the Overworld, and the only place to farm Totems of Undying. Below: the placement rules that make most mansions a 10,000-block trip, a seed where one sits 1,850 blocks from spawn, and how to clear one once you arrive.

Why mansions are so far away
Two rules combine against you. Java tries one mansion per region of 80×80 chunks, with a 20-chunk separation, so there is at most one attempt per 1,280-block square. And the attempt only becomes a mansion if the biome at that chunk is a dark forest, or since 1.21.4 a pale garden, which together cover a small fraction of the Overworld. Multiply a sparse grid by a rare biome and the nearest mansion on a typical seed is 5,000 to 20,000 blocks from spawn.
Our test seeds illustrate it: seeds 0, -1234567890123, 8675309123456789 and chunkscout have no mansion within 2,000 blocks of spawn. Seed 123456789 is the exception with a mansion at 1888, -368, about 1,850 blocks from spawn, which counts as very close.

The woodland mansion finder runs the grid and the biome check for the whole world, so it answers the only question that matters, how far is the nearest one, in a second. In-game, a cartographer's woodland explorer map points to the nearest mansion for a price in emeralds and a compass.

Dark forests and pale gardens
Dark forests are dense oak and dark oak woods with giant mushrooms and a canopy thick enough for mobs to spawn under in daylight. Since 1.18 they appear in temperate, humid, inland terrain, often next to plains and birch forests. The pale garden, added in 1.21.4, shares that climate and can host mansions too; it is the grey forest with the creaking, and even rarer than the dark forest.
Because a mansion needs the biome at one specific chunk, a region can hold a huge dark forest and still have no mansion if the attempt chunk falls just outside it. The biome finder with Highlight biome set to dark forest shows the candidate areas; the mansion finder shows which ones actually won the roll.

What lives inside
A mansion has three floors of randomised rooms around long corridors: bedrooms, libraries, a dining hall, storage rooms, a chapel, an arena, and secret rooms behind walls holding anything from a lapis block to a diamond block or an obsidian cube with a chest. The residents are illagers.
- Vindicators charge with iron axes and hit hard; shield first, then fight.
- Evokers summon fangs from the floor and vexes that fly through walls. Kill them fast; each drops a Totem of Undying, which saves you from death once.
- Allays are trapped in small cells in some rooms; free them and they will fetch items for you.
- Mansion chests hold enchanted books, diamond and iron gear, golden apples, music discs and the usual tools and food.
The structure never regenerates its illagers once they are killed, apart from random spawns in the dark, so a cleared mansion is a safe, enormous base. Many players light the ground floor and move in.
Clearing a mansion
- Travel through the Nether: a mansion 10,000 blocks away is 1,250 Nether blocks, an hour of tunnelling or a few minutes on an ice road. Use the portal calculator to place the exit portal within 128 blocks of the mansion.
- Arrive by day and clear the surroundings; the canopy spawns mobs underneath it at all hours.
- Enter on the ground floor and work room by room with a shield up. Close doors behind you.
- Prioritise evokers. Fangs follow you in a line, so step sideways; vexes have little health, so swing at them when they close in.
- Check walls for secret rooms: a wall with no door where the floor plan should have a room is worth breaking into.
- Drop a marker on the map for the mansion's entrance and for any Totem drop you leave for a friend.
Totem farming and raids
Evokers also appear in raids from wave five onward, which makes a village with a nearby pillager outpost the renewable Totem source once the mansion's evokers are gone. The mansion gives you the first few totems; a raid farm gives you the rest. The village finder and the outpost finder together show where such a setup is possible on your seed.
If your seed has no mansion within reach, the seed finder can search for one close to spawn. Expect to test many seeds: a mansion within 1,000 blocks is rare enough that it is worth bragging about.
Bedrock mansions
Bedrock uses the same 80-chunk regions with its own random draw, and its mansions are marked Approximate on the map: in testing against the Bedrock Dedicated Server, only about half of the attempt positions generated a mansion in-game, while no real mansion was missing. Treat a Bedrock mansion marker as a strong lead, and use the dark forest highlight as a second check before a long trip.
Questions
How rare are woodland mansions?
One attempt per 80×80-chunk region on Java, kept only in dark forests and pale gardens. On most seeds the nearest mansion is 5,000 to 20,000 blocks away; one within 2,000 is unusual.
Do mansions respawn their mobs?
No. Vindicators and evokers that generated with the mansion do not come back, though hostile mobs still spawn in dark rooms. A cleared and lit mansion stays clear.
How do I get a Totem of Undying?
Kill an evoker; every one drops a totem. Mansions have a handful of evokers, and raids spawn them from wave five, which is the renewable source.
Can a mansion generate in a pale garden?
Yes, since 1.21.4. The pale garden shares the dark forest's climate and the mansion's biome check accepts it.
Is the mansion finder exact on Bedrock?
The positions follow Bedrock's placement, but only about half of them generate a mansion in-game, so they are marked Approximate. No real mansion was missing in testing.
