Stronghold Rings: Find the End Portal Fast

JavaBedrock

Strongholds are not random. Java places all 128 of them in eight rings around the origin, so the first one is always between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks away, in one of three directions. Knowing the rules turns a day of Eye of Ender throwing into a single trip.

Eight rings, 128 strongholds

Java Edition decides where every stronghold goes before you have placed a single block. The world gets 128 of them, no more and no fewer, arranged in eight concentric rings around 0, 0. The rings hold 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36 and 9 strongholds, and each ring is about 3,072 blocks wider than the last.

RingStrongholdsDistance from 0, 0 (blocks)

264,352 – 5,888
3107,424 – 8,960

52113,568 – 15,104
62816,640 – 18,176
73619,712 – 21,248
8922,784 – 24,320

Within a ring the strongholds are spread evenly around the circle, starting from a random angle, so the three in the first ring sit roughly 120 degrees apart. Each one is then nudged to the nearest spot whose biome allows a stronghold, so the distances are not all the same, and a stronghold can end up a few hundred blocks further out than the ring's nominal range.

What that looks like on a real seed

Seed 123456789 on Java 26.3 spawns at 64, -48. Its first ring holds strongholds at -1116, -1596 (1,946 blocks from spawn), 2468, -108 (2,405 blocks) and -908, 1636 (1,944 blocks): north-west, east and south-west, about a third of a circle apart. The second ring starts at 2772, 3860, 4,755 blocks away. Whichever stronghold you pick, the Nether cuts the trip to under 300 blocks.

The text seed chunkscout is a friendlier case: its first ring is at -412, -1372 (1,433 blocks), 1348, 548 (1,455 blocks) and -1164, 1044 (1,564 blocks). All three are near the inner edge of the ring, so any direction works.

The stronghold finder lists every stronghold sorted by distance from spawn or from any point you type, with the ring it belongs to. The marker is the stronghold's starting staircase; the portal room is somewhere within the structure, usually within 50 to 100 blocks of the marker.

How Eyes of Ender actually behave

A thrown Eye of Ender flies toward the starting staircase of the nearest stronghold, rises, hangs for a moment and drops about 12 blocks ahead of you, or shatters, with a one-in-five chance each throw. It points at the horizontal position only, and it does not stop pointing when you are above the stronghold; it just starts dropping straight down.

The classic method is triangulation: throw one eye, walk a few hundred blocks sideways, throw another, and find where the two lines cross. It works because the first ring has only three strongholds, so the nearest one is usually obvious. With the map you can skip the geometry and keep the eyes for the portal frame, which needs up to twelve of them.

Each of the twelve End portal frames already holds an eye with a 10% chance, so on average a portal needs ten or eleven. Bring twelve plus a couple for throwing inside the stronghold, where an eye tells you which corridor leads toward the portal room.

The fastest route: through the Nether

Nether coordinates are Overworld coordinates divided by eight, so a stronghold 1,944 blocks away is 243 Nether blocks from a portal at spawn. Build a portal at spawn, note the Nether coordinates the portal calculator gives you for the stronghold, tunnel there at Y 120 or so where the Nether roof keeps you safe, and build the second portal. You will come out within about 128 blocks of the stronghold, usually on the surface above it.

Dig down at the marker's coordinates instead of looking for an entrance: strongholds have no surface entrance, and their starting staircase is underground at the marked X and Z. Bring a water bucket for the drop and torches for the silverfish.

On the way, switch the map to the Nether and check the fortress and bastion positions. On seed 123456789 the nearest fortress is at -160, -304 in Nether coordinates and the nearest bastion at 320, 16, so the portal trip to the north-western stronghold passes the fortress for blaze rods.

Inside the stronghold

A stronghold is a maze of stone brick: corridors with iron bars, spiral staircases, prison cells, a fountain room, store rooms and libraries with chests of enchanted books and cobwebs hiding spiders. The portal room is a small chamber with lava pools, a silverfish spawner and the twelve-frame portal over a pit. Smaller strongholds can be cut by caves and ravines, and a stronghold under an ocean is partly flooded.

Mark the portal room on the map once you have found it. Right-click to drop a marker named Portal with the room's coordinates, and the next time you come back, or the next player on the server, goes directly there.

Bedrock strongholds are different

Bedrock has no rings. It generates a stronghold under some villages and scatters more across the world, so the nearest one can be far: on seed 0 the first stronghold the map lists for Bedrock is at -3528, 1896, nearly 4,000 blocks from spawn, where Java's first ring would put one within 2,816. The map shows Bedrock's village-linked strongholds, the first of which was confirmed exact in testing, and marks them Approximate because later ones can shift if their village fails to generate.

On Bedrock the Eye of Ender still points to the nearest stronghold, so the throw-and-walk method remains the fallback when the map lists nothing close. Villages with a stronghold underneath are worth checking first: dig under the village well or the bell.

Questions

How far is the nearest stronghold?

On Java, between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks from 0, 0, because the first ring of three lies there. The stronghold finder gives the exact distance from your spawn for your seed.

Why does the Eye of Ender point somewhere with no stronghold?

It points to the stronghold's starting staircase, which is underground with no surface entrance. Dig down at the spot where the eyes start dropping straight down, or read the coordinates from the map.

How many Eyes of Ender should I bring?

Twelve for the frames in the worst case, though each frame has a 10% chance of already holding one, plus two or three for throwing. Each throw breaks the eye one time in five.

Is the portal room at the marker?

No. The marker is the stronghold's start. The portal room is within the structure, usually 50 to 100 blocks from the start; throw an eye inside the stronghold to pick the right corridor.

Are strongholds in the same place on Bedrock?

No. Bedrock does not use rings; it places strongholds under some villages and scatters others. Choose Bedrock on the map to see its village strongholds.
