Finding Villages: Types, Loot and Trades

JavaBedrock

A village in the first ten minutes changes a survival world: beds, food, a bell to find it again and villagers to trade with. Where they generate, what each biome variant is good for, and how to pick a seed or a direction with the village finder.

Where villages generate

A village needs one of six biomes at its starting point: plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga or snowy plains. Java tries one village per region of 34×34 chunks, picking a chunk at least 8 chunks from the region's edge, and only builds it if the biome at that chunk qualifies. That gives one attempt per 544×544 blocks, and in practice a village every 500 to 1,000 blocks across mixed terrain, with none in forests, jungles, mountains or oceans.

Bedrock uses the same 34-chunk regions but chooses the chunk with its own random generator, so for the same seed the attempt lands elsewhere. The village finder implements both and was checked against the official servers, so set the edition first and the positions are right for your game.

The biome at the start decides the style. Plains and meadow villages are oak and cobblestone; desert villages sandstone and terracotta; savanna villages acacia; taiga villages spruce with campfires; snowy villages spruce under snow with ice paths. The finder's popup names the variant, which saves walking 800 blocks to a desert village when you wanted oak and hay.

Loot worth the detour

Every village has beds, crops and a bell. The chests depend on which buildings generated. A blacksmith (the weaponsmith, toolsmith or armorer house, with its lava and anvil) can hold iron, obsidian, diamonds and enchanted gear, which is the best early loot in the Overworld. Fletcher houses hold arrows, feathers and string, tanneries leather and saddles, and the cartographer's house a map or two.

Take the hay bales, the carrots and potatoes, and a bed before nightfall. Leave the bell where it is: ringing it sends every villager home, which is the quickest way to count them and to find the village centre again.

Larger villages spawn an iron golem that defends villagers and drops iron when it dies, and cats spawn in villages with enough beds; a cat on your bed keeps phantoms away.

Trades that change the game

Villagers take professions from job blocks, so an unemployed villager next to a lectern becomes a librarian. A few trades are worth building a village around.

  • Librarian: enchanted books, including Mending, Unbreaking III and Silk Touch. Break and replace the lectern until the first-level trade is the book you want.
  • Cartographer: explorer maps to ocean monuments, woodland mansions and, since 1.21, trial chambers. Cheaper than searching, though the map on this site is cheaper still.
  • Cleric: buys rotten flesh for emeralds, the easiest emerald source early on, and sells Ender pearls at higher levels.
  • Farmer, fletcher and fisherman: fast emerald income from crops, sticks and string.
  • Armorer and weaponsmith: diamond armour and tools for emeralds once levelled.

Curing a zombie villager with a splash potion of weakness and a golden apple gives permanent discounts from that villager. Abandoned villages, which generate in place of about 2% of villages with cobwebs and mossy cobblestone, are full of zombie villagers for this purpose.

Villages and pillager outposts

Pillager outposts generate in the same biomes as villages and often near them. Killing a captain gives Bad Omen, and walking into a village with Bad Omen starts a raid; survive it and you get Hero of the Village, with trades heavily discounted for a while. The outpost finder shows the nearest outpost, and a village with an outpost within a few hundred blocks is a good raid farm candidate.

Seed chunkscout: the outpost at 256, −448 is closer to spawn than any village, so patrols arrive before villagers do.

The reverse is also true: a village next to an outpost is dangerous on day one, because patrols wander in. If your seed puts the two together, build walls or light the perimeter before you sleep there.

Finding a village at spawn

If your current seed has no village nearby, the seed finder searches for seeds with a village within a chosen distance of spawn, optionally of a specific type, and ranks the results. For an existing world, use the village finder's Nearest list, which sorts villages by distance from spawn and lets you copy a /tp or just a bearing.

Villages are an Exact structure for Java and Bedrock: every village the finder showed in testing was present in the official server's world, so a direction is safe to commit to. Only the exact layout of houses depends on terrain the map does not simulate, and a village on a steep hill can have a few buildings cut off.

Questions

How far apart are villages?

One attempt per 34×34-chunk region on Java, so roughly every 544 blocks where the biome allows, and typically 500 to 1,000 blocks apart across mixed terrain. Oceans, forests and mountains leave gaps.

Which biomes have villages?

Plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy plains. Each biome gives a different building style and the finder names the variant.

Is the village finder exact on Bedrock?

Yes. The finder implements Bedrock's own village placement and the positions were confirmed against the Bedrock Dedicated Server. Choose Bedrock in the edition selector.

What is a zombie village?

About 2% of villages generate abandoned, with cobwebs, mossy cobblestone, no doors and zombie villagers. They are the best place to cure villagers for discounted trades.

Can I find a village with a command?

With cheats, /locate structure minecraft:village_plains (or village_desert, village_savanna, village_taiga, village_snowy) on Java, and /locate structure village on Bedrock. The finder gives the same answer without cheats.
