Blaze Farm: Picking the Right Fortress

JavaBedrock

The closest fortress to your portal isn't automatically the one to farm. On seed 8675309123456789 there are two about 300 Nether blocks from spawn, in opposite directions, one in a soul sand valley and one in basalt deltas. Here's how we'd choose, with numbers from five seeds and the spawner rules that decide how the farm works.

Nearest isn't always best

For a first trip to grab a handful of rods, sure, go to the closest fortress. A farm is different. You'll go back dozens of times, carry stacks of blocks there and stand next to it for long sessions, so a fortress 40 blocks further away but easier to reach and quieter around it wins every time.

What we actually look at, in order:

  1. Distance from the portal you'll really use, in Nether blocks. Under about 300 is a short walk on a tunnel or an ice road.
  2. The biome around it. It decides the route and the mobs you'll fight on the way. Warped forest is calm; basalt deltas are a mess to cross.
  3. A reachable blaze spawner. The map shows where the fortress starts, not where its spawners are, so this one you check in person.
  4. What's next door. A bastion 200 blocks away won't touch your farm, but you don't want your daily route running past a hoglin stable.

Five seeds, measured

We took each seed's world spawn, divided by eight for the Nether position of a spawn portal, and listed the nearest fortress from there. The Overworld column is where a matching portal would go if you want one dedicated to the farm.

Every seed had a fortress within 350 blocks, and 8 to 10 within 1,000 Nether blocks of spawn, so you have options. Keep the scale in mind: 246 Nether blocks on seed 0 is a couple of minutes on foot, while the same trip in the Overworld would be almost 2,000 blocks.

On seed 8675309123456789 we'd take the soul sand valley one at 288, 64. It happens to be 16 blocks closer, but that's not the reason. The other one sits in basalt deltas, which means jagged basalt, magma cubes and lava pockets everywhere, plus a bastion 233 blocks away. In the valley, soul sand slows you down, but a tunnel or a block path fixes that, and the nearest bastion is 439 blocks off.

Bedrock has fewer fortresses

On Bedrock the picture changes. With the same seeds on Bedrock 26.3, seed 0 and 123456789 each had only 4 fortresses within 1,000 Nether blocks of spawn, against 9 or 10 on Java. Seed 0 is lucky, with one at −136, 104, only 168 blocks out. Seed 123456789 isn't: its nearest Bedrock fortress is at 536, 104, 539 blocks away, with a bastion 181 blocks from it.

So on Bedrock, take whatever is close and reachable. And set the edition before reading coordinates: the fortress finder is exact on both, but Java and Bedrock positions for the same seed have nothing to do with each other.

Getting there and finding the spawner

Two ways to set up the route. Either tunnel from your existing portal to the fortress at around Y 70 to 80, which is usually above the bridges, or build a fresh portal right at the fortress, step through, and let the game make an Overworld portal near the coordinates times eight. The second one only makes sense if that Overworld spot is somewhere you'd want to be; check it on the map first. The portal linking guide covers why linked portals sometimes go to the wrong place.

Once you're there, the marker is just where the fortress starts. The bridges and corridors spread out from it, often over a hundred blocks. Blaze spawners sit on raised platforms with stairs leading up, usually out in the open on the bridges, and you can spot them by the blazes already floating around. Some fortresses have one, some have two, and the odd one has none you can easily build around.

Spawner rules that shape the farm

These are the Java numbers, and they're the reason every simple blaze farm looks roughly the same:

  • The spawner only runs while a player is within 16 blocks of it. Your AFK spot has to be inside that.
  • Each cycle it tries to spawn up to 4 blazes within 4 blocks sideways and 1 block up or down, then waits 10 to 40 seconds.
  • It stops while 6 or more blazes are already close by, so you have to keep killing them.
  • Rods only drop when a player kills the blaze (or your tamed wolf). That's why blaze farms end with you and a sword, not lava or fall damage. Looting raises the cap by one rod per level.
  • Each blaze is worth 10 XP, a nice side effect for repairing Mending gear.

Water evaporates in the Nether, so the water-stream tricks from Overworld mob farms don't work here. Most builds wall the spawner in with glass or nether brick, leave the blazes a narrow space to drift into, and give you a slot to hit them through with a Looting III sword. Snowballs hurt blazes too, which some designs use.

On Java there's a bigger option: blazes, wither skeletons and other fortress mobs also spawn naturally inside the fortress's bounding box, not only from spawners. The serious rate farms clear huge areas and use those spawns. That's a weekend project. A spawner farm is an afternoon.

Questions

How far away should a blaze farm fortress be?

Under about 300 Nether blocks from your main portal is comfortable. On our five Java test seeds the nearest fortress was 246 to 342 blocks from a spawn portal.

Does the biome around the fortress matter?

For the trip, yes. Warped forest is the calmest Nether biome, basalt deltas are the worst to cross. Inside the fortress the mobs follow the fortress, not the biome.

Does the map show blaze spawners?

No. It shows where each fortress starts, exactly, on Java and Bedrock. The spawners are on raised platforms along the bridges; you find those in person.

Why don't blazes drop rods in my farm?

Blaze rods only drop when a player or a tamed wolf gets the kill. If the blazes die to fall damage, fire or anything else, you get nothing.

Are there fewer fortresses on Bedrock?

On the two seeds we compared, yes: 4 fortresses within 1,000 Nether blocks of spawn on Bedrock, against 9 to 10 on Java.
