Witch Huts: Finding Them and Building a Witch Farm

JavaBedrock

Happy Halloween. Witch huts are the creepiest little build in the game and secretly one of the most useful, because on Java the hut keeps spawning witches forever. We went looking for the dream double and quad hut seeds, scanned 20,000 of them, and came back with a good seed, a few surprises and some bad news for quad hunters.

What a witch hut is (and where they hide)

A witch hut is a tiny spruce shack on stilts, sitting over swamp water. Inside you get a crafting table, a cauldron, a potted mushroom, one witch and one black cat. That's it. No chest, no loot, nothing worth the trip if you only look at the blocks. The value is the ground it stands on.

They only generate in the regular swamp biome. Mangrove swamps look like they should qualify and they don't, so if your world is all mangroves you're out of luck. On Java the game tries one hut per region of 32×32 chunks (the same grid desert temples, jungle temples and igloos use), and the attempt only succeeds if the spot is swamp. Most attempts fail. That's why huts feel so rare.

How rare? We ran the engine over 20,000 seeds (numeric seeds 1 to 20,000, Java 26.3) and counted every hut within 3,000 blocks of 0, 0 in both directions. That's a 6,000 by 6,000 square, about 36 million blocks of map per seed. The average seed had 1.4 huts in that whole area, and 42% had none at all. If your spawn is nowhere near a swamp, expect a long walk.

Why witch farms only work at the hut (on Java)

Witches can show up anywhere in the dark like any other mob, but they're a small slice of the normal spawn pool. The hut is different. On Java, the hut has a structure bounding box, a 7×9 block area from Y 64 to Y 71, and inside that box the only hostile mob that can spawn is a witch. Spawning floors in that box spawn witches and nothing else, for as long as the chunk is loaded. Every witch farm on Java is built around that one rule.

This also means the exact position matters a lot more than for, say, a village. A floor one block outside the box spawns zombies and skeletons like anywhere else. When you open a hut on the witch hut finder, the coordinates it shows are the hut's position, and you build the spawning floors to cover the box around it.

What you actually farm: witches drop redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, spider eyes, glass bottles and sticks. Glowstone and redstone are the big ones if you don't want to raid the Nether every week, and the sugar plus gunpowder combo is handy for potions and rockets. Witches also sometimes drop the potion they were drinking when they die.

Building the farm without losing your mind

Every witch farm design is a variation on the same plan. Tear out the hut, put solid spawning floors inside the box, kill every other spawning space around it, and drop the witches into a kill chamber. A few things we'd do differently after looking at a lot of huts on the map:

  1. Pick the hut over water. The box starts at Y 64, right around swamp water level. Building floors over shallow water is easier than over a lake bed or in mid-air, and lighting the swamp around it is much less work than lighting a forest.
  2. Light or slab everything within 128 blocks. Every dark spot nearby competes with your floors for the mob cap. Caves underneath are the classic farm killer; a cave check before you start saves a lot of torches.
  3. AFK at least 24 blocks from the floors. Mobs won't spawn closer than that to you, and they despawn instantly beyond 128 blocks. A platform high above the hut usually does it.
  4. Kill by hand if you want XP, or let them fall onto magma or into lava if you only want the drops. Witches heal themselves with potions, so fall damage alone often leaves them on half a heart.

Witches throw splash potions of poison, slowness, weakness and harming at you while you build. Bring milk buckets and some food. And yes, it's surprisingly spooky building a farm in a swamp at night with a witch cackling somewhere under your feet.

Double huts: the real numbers

A double hut means two huts close enough to stand somewhere that's within 128 blocks of both boxes. One AFK spot, two farms worth of witches. Everyone wants one. Very few seeds have one near spawn.

In our 20,000-seed scan we counted a pair as a double when the two hut centres were under 200 blocks apart. That leaves room to stand in the middle and still reach both. Out of 20,000 seeds, 160 had a double inside that 6,000 by 6,000 square. That's 0.8%. The tightest pair anywhere in the scan was 144 blocks apart, on seed 2699 at 320, −1024 and 320, −1168.

Seed 3564 is our pick. Spawn is at 0, 0, the first hut is 369 blocks east, and the second one sits 167 blocks further along. The middle of the two boxes is around 451, 60, about 84 blocks from each hut centre. AFK above that point and both huts stay in range with plenty of margin, even after you add height. It's close enough to set up on day one.

So what about quad witch huts?

Here's the bad news. In 20,000 seeds we didn't find a single triple, let alone a quad. We checked every group of three huts in the scanned area for all three being within 230 blocks of each other and got zero hits. Quad witch hut seeds do exist, but people find them with brute-force searches over millions of seeds, usually far out from spawn.

Our honest advice: don't burn a week hunting a quad. A double near spawn gives you a farm you'll actually build. If you already have a world, open it in the finder and use the Nearest list to see every hut around you, sorted by distance. Two entries a couple hundred blocks apart is your double.

Bedrock players, read this first

The finder places Bedrock witch huts exactly, but Bedrock uses its own placement, so the same seed gives completely different huts. Seed 3564 on Bedrock 26.3 has just one hut within 3,000 blocks of 0, 0, at −1848, −1288, nowhere near the Java double. Seed 0 is the same story: the nearest Java hut is at −1824, 304, the nearest Bedrock one at −1800, 24.

Spawning works differently too. Bedrock witches don't follow Java's tidy bounding box rule, so Java farm tutorials won't carry over block for block. Always switch the edition in the toolbar before trusting a seed someone posted, and look for a Bedrock-specific design if you're on console or phone.

For more farm planning, slime farms follow similar rules about spawn spaces and AFK distance, and choosing a base location covers fitting a few farms around one home.

Questions

What biome do witch huts spawn in?

Only the regular swamp biome. Mangrove swamps never get witch huts, even though they look like they should.

How rare is a double witch hut?

Rare. In our scan of 20,000 Java 26.3 seeds, 160 had two huts under 200 blocks apart within 3,000 blocks of 0, 0. That's 0.8% of seeds.

Is there a good double witch hut seed for 26.3?

Seed 3564 on Java 26.3 has huts at 368, 32 and 528, 80, 167 blocks apart and about 370 blocks from spawn. Stand above roughly 451, 60 to reach both.

Do witches respawn in the hut?

On Java, yes. Witches keep spawning on dark, solid blocks inside the hut's bounding box (7×9 blocks, Y 64 to 71) while the area is loaded, which is what witch farms rely on.

Does the black cat respawn?

No. The black cat spawns once with the hut. Tame it with raw cod or salmon if you want to keep it.

Are witch hut coordinates the same on Java and Bedrock?

No. Bedrock places huts with its own algorithm, so the same seed has different huts. Pick your edition in the finder before you go looking.
