How to use the Spawn Point Finder

This tool estimates the world spawn point for your seed and draws the spawn chunks, the area around spawn that stays loaded for farms. Turn on 'Spawn chunks' in the layers panel to see both the entity-processing and loaded areas.

  1. Enter your seed and version. The spawn marker and spawn chunks square appear near the world origin.
  2. Toggle 'Spawn chunks' under Layers to draw the 19×19 (entity ticking) and 23×23 (loaded) chunk areas, or 3×3 / 5×5 for 1.20.5+.
  3. Hover to read the spawn biome and exact coordinates, or copy a /tp command from the popup.

How the world spawn is chosen

On Java 1.18+, the game searches the climate noise near 0,0 for a land position that suits spawning (not ocean, not too extreme), then looks for a grass block or other valid surface block close to it. Older versions searched within 256 blocks for a spawn biome such as plains, forest or taiga. Either way, spawn usually lands within a few hundred blocks of the origin.

Players then spawn at a random spot within the spawnRadius gamerule (10 blocks by default on Java) of the world spawn, so your first view can differ slightly from the marker.

Spawn chunks and farms

Spawn chunks stay loaded even when no player is nearby. Up to 1.20.4 that meant a 19×19-chunk area where entities and redstone run, inside a 23×23 loaded area. That's why iron farms, mob sorters and clocks were built there.

In 1.20.5 Java added the spawnChunkRadius gamerule (default 2), which shrank the default area to 3×3 entity-processing chunks inside 5×5 loaded chunks. Set it to 0 to disable spawn chunks, or raise it to bring the old behaviour back. Bedrock has no spawn chunks and uses ticking areas instead (/tickingarea).

Questions

Why is the spawn point approximate?

The game picks the spawn by searching for a valid surface block near a seed-dependent position, which depends on full terrain generation. The map estimates the spot from the biome map, usually within a few blocks.

How big are spawn chunks?

Before 1.20.5: a 19×19 chunk entity-processing area inside a 23×23 loaded area. From 1.20.5: a 3×3 processing area inside 5×5 loaded chunks by default, adjustable with the spawnChunkRadius gamerule.

Is the spawn point the same on Bedrock?

Bedrock picks its own spawn, and the map uses the Java estimate for it, so treat Bedrock spawn as a rough guide. Bedrock has no spawn chunks; use /tickingarea for always-loaded areas.

Can I change the world spawn?

Yes. Use /setworldspawn at the spot you want, or set spawnRadius to 0 so every player appears on exactly the same block.

Why do I spawn a few blocks away from the marker?

Java spreads first spawns and respawns within the spawnRadius gamerule (10 blocks by default) around the world spawn, onto a safe surface block.
